He gained prominence as a college-bound young man in "American Graffiti (1973)" and as a nervy Jewish kid with high hopes in "Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz (1974)". By the latter part of the 1970s, Dreyfuss was established as a major star, playing leads (and alter-egos) for Steven Spielberg in two of the top-grossing films of the that decade: "The Jaws (1975)" and "Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977)". He won a Best Actor Oscar in his first romantic lead as an out-of-work actor in "Goodbye Girl (1977)". Dreyfuss also produced and starred in the entertaining private eye movie "The Big Fix (1978)". After a brief lull in the early 1980s, a well-publicized drug problem and a succession of commercial disappointments ("The Competition (1980)", "The Whose Life Is It Anyway? (1981)", "Buddy System (1984)"), a clean and sober Dreyfuss re-established himself in the mid-'as one of Hollywood's more engaging leads. He co-starred with Bette Midler and Nick Nolte in Paul Mazursky's popular "The Down and Out in Beverly Hills (1986)". That same year Dreyfuss provided the narration and appeared in the opening and closing "bookends" of Rob Reiner's nostalgic "Stand by Me (1986)". He quickly followed up with "Nuts (1987)" opposite Barbra Streisand, Barry Levinson 's "Tin Men (1987)" with Danny DeVito and "Stakeout (1987)" with Emilio Estevez. Dreyfuss continued working steadily through the end of the 1980s and into the 1990s, most notably in Mazursky's "Moon Over Parador (1988)", Spielberg's "Always (1989)", "Postcards from the Edge (1990)" and "Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead (1990)". He appeared as a member of an ensemble that included Holly Hunter, Gena Rowlands and Danny Aiello in the romantic comedy _Once Around_ (1991)- (qv) and opposite Bill Murray in the successful comedy "What About Bob? (1991)". Dreyfuss has also remained active in the theater (Death And The Maiden 1992) and on TV. He returned to features in the adaptation of Neil Simon's play "Lost in Yonkers (1993)" and followed with a supporting turn as the querulous political opponent in "American President (1995)". Dreyfuss received some of the best notices of his career as a determined, inspiring music teacher coping with a deaf son and the demands of his career in "Mr. Holland's Opus (1995)". hide |

A university professor is paid to find the last undiscovered tribe of New Guinea. When he fails to find the tribe, he comes home, and rather than admitting that he’s failed, he gives a lecture about the Shelmikedmu tribe (named after his children: Shelly, Mike, and Edmund) and then has his family dress like “Shelmikedmus,” so that he can film them as proof of his discovery.

Martin Brody is the new police chief of Amity, an island resort town somewhere in New England. He has a wife named Ellen, and two sons named Michael and Sean. On a Summer morning, Brody is called to the beach, where the mangled body of Summer vacationer Chrissie Watkins has washed ashore. The medical examiner tells Brody that it could have been a shark that killed Watkins. Mayor Larry Vaughn, who is desperate to not lose the money that will be brought in by 4th of July tourists, wants Brody to say Watkins’s death was caused by a motorboat propeller instead of a shark, because the thought of a shark in Amity’s waters would drive tourists away from Amity. It looks like Vaughn is a mayor who puts money ahead of people’s lives. Shark expert Matt Hooper believes Watkins was killed by a shark. Hooper is proven right a few days later, when Alex Kintner is killed by the shark that killed Watkins. Looking for the quickest solution, Vaughn tells all of the local fishermen to let him know if they see the shark. A shark hunter named Quint offers to find the shark and kill it, but Vaughn thinks Quint’s price of $10,000 is too high. When a tiger shark is killed and hauled in by a couple of boaters, Vaughn hastily says that the shark crisis is over, but Hooper says the shark that’s been killing people a huge great white shark is still in Amity’s waters, but Vaughn leaves the beaches opened because all he cares about is the 4th of July tourist money. On the 4th of July, Vaughn encourages people to swim at the beach, and Hooper is proven right again when the shark kills a man, biting the man’s leg off. Michael, who was in the water at the time of the attack, is taken to the hospital, where he’s treated for shock after watching the shark kill the guy. Brody asks Vaughn to hire Quint to find the shark. Because his own kids were at that beach too, Vaughn agrees to hire Quint to find the shark. Quint, Hooper, and Brody are sent out to sea in Quint’s boat, the Orca, ready to do whatever it takes to find the shark.

Brett, a young woman from the suburbs, is an associate editor at a small New York publishing house, hoping to be promoted when, on the same day, she meets a literary lion, Archie Knox, who’s 50 and who shows an interest in her, and gets a new boss, a dolly-dolly Brit. Brett is soon dating Archie, then moves in with him. He’s charming, attentive, and gives advice. He also has a history - ex-wives, a distant daughter, a couple of diseases, and a photo album of former girlfriends. It’s no fairy tale: family issues (and more) intervene, and Brett has decisions to make. Meanwhile, she’s working with a writer who fears peanut butter sticking to the roof of his mouth. Is Archie dinner, an hors d’oeuvre, or a peanut-butter sandwich?
